Ecuador’s southern neighbor, Peru, is in a different situation. While the Lima government is trying to implement the WTO (World Trade Organization) economic policies, particularly the indigenous communities of the Andean region and Puno/Lake Titicaca area, people in the interior of the country are not going along with the capital. There was a two-day countrywide general strike in early July of 2007 against proposed economic reforms sponsored by WTO. It was in part an extension of a month long strike by professors of public universities that was to continue for several month. As you will see in the photos, people here take strikes and protests seriously. The country roads are blocked by boulders and the streets of the cities are covered with broken glass and stones.
