Documentary Photo Essay: A Day Without Immigrants (May Day) - Chicago 05.01.2006

International Worker’s Day (May Day) is celebrated in honor of working people around the world. It traces its origins to 1889 demonstrations in Chicago, where a number of workers were killed by police fire.

On May 1, 2006 the May Day was also designated as A Day Without Immigrants. In Chicago alone, about half a million people marched in opposition to House Immigration Bill HR4437. These images are a glimpse of this historic event.

The photograph documents how the people who cross the border illegally have no legal identity, no face in the society. The photo was taken in Grant Park in Downtown Chicago. The cityscape of the Windy City skyline is present in the background. This photograph displays and documents an immigrant who serves as a Chicago volunteer fire fighter and displays his patriotism by waiving a huge American flag. Around half a million people from all layers of society and affiliation showed up to sympathize and support the cause of the Day Without Immigrants demonstration gathered at Grant Park on May Day in 2006. The men hold signs that read: Who's the Illegal Alien, Pilgrim? Many illegal aliens trace their lineages to the Americas for over ten thousand (10000) years. The immigration community of the Windy City was represented by about half a million people in Grant Park, Chicago. The image documents the different feelings and views that were on display in the city on May first (1st), 2006. Many representatives of Chicago's Catholic Church were present at the Day Without Immigrants event (May Day). While having the federal government play an active role in the immigration policy is important; having a social presence, and community structures to address the problems faced by the population of immigrants is just as important. In Chicago Grand Park representatives of Catholic Church were present throughout. Entire families came to the Grant Park on May 01, 2006. Even though, the nature threaten to rain at any moment there was almost no water falling in the hours when the Day Without Immigrants march was held. A number of participants are caring a sign that describes the main theme of the Day Without Immigrant: Liberty and Justice For All. In the background, the architecture of the downtown Chicago is visible with many hotels and office buildings relying on labor of the immigrant community in Chicago.
